Spring 2015

February 2015

Dear Parents/Carers of Children in Year 1,

Happy New Year and many thanks for the lovely Christmas cards, messages and presents.

Reading: Thank you for your all your support with reading at home. We cannot stress highly enough how important regular reading is.  We would be grateful if you could continue to complete the communication book by filling in the title of the book and any comments you would like to make.

English: The children will be reading poems and extending lines to create their own versions. We will also be looking at instruction writing and writing our own sets of instructions to link with our topic. After our February half term, we will be writing our own stories.
Spellings: Please continue to work on the termly and weekly spellings, as this will be very beneficial to the children and their progress with their writing, particularly as we have now introduced various spellings of the same sound. Revisiting previously taught sounds at home, as well as in school is immensely helpful. We will continue to send new weekly spelling lists home on a Monday, which will be tested on the following Monday.

Maths: Maths work for this term will cover a wide range of topics such as number work, money, shape and space. The children will continue to bring home a Maths game on a Friday to be handed in on a Wednesday. The games do range in topics and difficulty but all are intended to help your child practise and reinforce his or her Maths skills. Again, please could you comment in the communication book how your child enjoys the game and how you may have adapted the game to make it more or less challenging for your child.

In addition to this, any help you can give your child in learning number bonds (i.e. 3+7, 8+2 etc.) to 10 would be invaluable and counting in 10s, 5s and 2s. Ordering the days of the week and months of the year and recognising 2D shapes in the environment are skills you might like to practise too.

Topic: Our topic for this term, is ‘Out of this World.’ This will include work across the curriculum, in particular Geography, Science and Design Technology. In History we will also be learning about the first Moon landing. The children are already enjoying this topic and have loved creating our own space rocket for the role-play area. Thank you for the information books you have already sent into school, they are a valuable source of information.

P.E: Our focus for PE this term will be dance. Please ensure girls have a spare pair of socks in their kit if they wear tights to prevent cold feet!

Science: The children will be learning about ‘Light and Dark’ and how the Sun affects seasonal changes.

R.E:  In “Who made the World?”, the children will be asking and responding to questions arising from The Creation Story.

Show and Tell: We will continue to have a designated show and tell time on a Monday afternoon. We do ask that the children show and tell something that is related to our topics or about something they have achieved outside of school.

Also, can you please ensure that all of your child’s school uniform and PE kit is named and that they have a water bottle in school every day. As a result of the changes which now allow all children to have the option of a hot lunch, we have also reinstated the lunch slips which most of you will be familiar with from Reception. These will be sent home each Friday.

Finally, the children will be performing the Year 1 class assembly on Wednesday 25th March 2015 at 9.10a.m. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Please do not hesitate to speak to us if you have any concerns or questions,

Thank you for your continued support,

Mhairi Jeavons & Jane Rowe
