11th September 2014
Welcome to Year 1. We are so pleased with how well the children have settled and have grasped new routines. We look forward to a busy and exciting year.
Our topic this term is “Blow Your House Down” which will link some of the work we will be covering this term:
Our Science topic this term is Materials and Properties, during which the children will learn what material objects are made from and investigate what they may be useful for. In DT the children have already set to work on using different materials to make a structure and will illustrate the topic through Art. In History and Geography we will look at The Great Fire of London as well as features associated with a town or village. The children are always encouraged to bring in relevant items of interest, books or information they have found to support the topic. Please ensure that any items brought in are named. Computing will be used throughout most areas of the curriculum.
We shall be learning about Traditional Tales, Poetry and Instructions this term, including a focus on an oral storytelling of The Three Little Pigs.
Please continue to read daily with your child and comment on their reading in their communication books. Regular practice ensures that the children make good progress. The children will be given the opportunity to change their reading book every day. However, if they have not had an opportunity to read it or you would like them to have it for more than one night please keep it.
Several changes have happened with regard to Spelling in the newly revised curriculum, and more information regarding this will follow on Curriculum Evening. The children will continue with daily sessions in phonics, spelling patterns and handwriting.
The children will be working on many areas of maths during the term including counting to a hundred, adding and subtracting, measuring and identifying shapes. At home it would really give them an advantage if you could practise counting in ones and tens and help them in the recognition and reading of numbers around them. Maths games will be given out on a Friday and handed in on a Wednesday.
R.E: Why do we celebrate special times?
Our focus in P.E this term will be gymnastics and children will learn how to control their body when travelling, balancing and copying sequences. Although our P.E. days are Wednesdays and Fridays, it would be useful if the children could have their PE kits in school every day. You may wish to provide your child with a pair of tracksuit bottoms to wear when the weather gets a little chillier and it would be useful for girls who wear tights to have a pair of socks in their kit too. Please can you ensure that all items of PE kit are labelled with your child’s name.
Show and Tell:
On Monday afternoons we will have designated ‘Show and Tell’ time. As far as possible we would like this to be related to our topic.
Can you please ensure that your child has a named water bottle in school every day?
We look forward to seeing you at the Curriculum Evening and on Parents Evening but if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to see us before or after school.
Thank you for your support,
Mhairi Jeavons and Jane Rowe
